Ran Ortner

Ran Ortner has been based in Brooklyn since 1990 and has devoted his career entirely to capturing waves. Working in a minimalist style shaped by decades of surfing, he explores both the intensity and subtlety of the ocean through layered oil paint. He was awarded the inaugural ArtPrize in 2009 and continues to work from his Brooklyn studio.

Behind the Edition

Keigo met Ran Ortner in 2007, producing their first screenprint edition together in 2010. This second edition expands the level of detail and movement through the screenprinting process while maintaining the same essence and approach. This edition is exceptionally rare, as he has created only two editions in his career.

Created without the use of traditional CMYK dots, the print achieves a more painterly and dynamic visual quality, with an enhanced sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Each layer was carefully adjusted by Ortner’s eye, echoing the meticulous process of his painting practice.

The intention is to place the viewer on the beach, encountering the work in the same way one experiences Ortner’s paintings.
