Monotype Print Series – Drop 1

Monotype printing is a process in which gouache, pastel, and oil stick are applied intuitively to a single plate and printed only once. By repeatedly adding to, erasing from, and reworking the same plate, each print takes on a completely distinct appearance. Because all of the works originate from the same plate, an unexpected sense of continuity begins to emerge. Seen together, the series can feel like a life unfolding over time. Each monotype print is a unique work, often considered comparable to an original painting.

All monotypes are unique, one-of-a-kind works

Behind the Edition

We collaborated with Mason on a series of monotype prints. In our studio—a new and unfamiliar space for him—he produced multiple works over several focused days. Each time he worked, new images emerged, as if his state of mind on that day were directly imprinted onto the surface.

What matters most to us is creating moments in which artists encounter something they did not anticipate. Being present for those moments of discovery is our greatest joy.

The work Mason created on the final day retained the core of the visual language he has developed over time. Rather than repeating past expressions, a new direction seemed to be subtly emerging. New works will be released in phases, beginning with an initial release of 6 pieces.
