koichi sato, born in 1974 in Tokyo, Japan, is a self-taught artist currently based in Japan. Inspired by a childhood immersed in television, sports, and pop culture imagery, his work playfully reinterprets these influences through bold stylization, vibrant color, and rhythmic patterns. Sato has developed a dedicated following among collectors, with his distinctive nostalgic sensibility and striking use of color making his works highly sought after. His ability to merge retro aesthetics with playful contemporary themes resonates with audiences worldwide, further establishing his presence in the contemporary art scene. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery, The Hole, Ross+Kramer Gallery, and 56 Henry Gallery in New York City, as well as Nanzuka in Tokyo, among others.

Screenprinted & Gouache Monotype

This work begins with a screenprint in one or four colors on an acrylic plate.

The artist then paints directly on the surface using gouache, adding unique hand-drawn details to each print.

The plate is finally run through a press, transferring the combined image onto paper and creating a one-of-a-kind monotype.

A meticulous process that combines the precision of screen printing with the artistry of manual enhancements. While the primary image is created through screen printing, each print is individually hand-finished,with the artist adding brushstrokes, textures, or other details to elevate the work. this process results in a one-of-a-kind piece, where the technical precision of the print is complemented by the artist’s personal touch, ensuring each edition stands out with unique characteristics and depth.
